The credit for this idea goes to my colleagues: Donna Guhse, Michael Little Crow, and Jennifer Bohart. The graphic combines an intuitive way to present the rounding process (i.e. as a “which number are we closer to” idea rather than a formal set of steps) and the idea of thinking of rounding as crossing a road. The technical steps in Illustrator came from a tutorial on creating Roads. I just put the idea into digital form. The top graphic can be used for whole number rounding. The bottom graphic introduces decimals.
